Top 10 Places to Use Keywords on your website

use keywords in seo

  • One of the key components of SEO is the use of keywords, and by understanding how to use keywords effectively, a business can easily increase online traffic over the long-term.
  • Using keywords correctly throughout a page and a website can be critical when you are trying to improve search engine ranking as part of your Internet marketing strategy.
  • At a basic level, you want to use relevant keywords in your content. In fact, you may want to identify keywords first and then create content built around these. Ideally, you can use a simple web tool, such as the Google Keyword Research Tool or Wordtracker, to determine the most relevant keywords for the website.

There are three things you need to remember :

  • concentrate your efforts on keywords likely to be used by potential customers

  • focus your individual web pages – target just a few keywords per page

  • take into account what the competition are doing

As far as useful keywords are concerned, you need to think the way potential customers are likely to think.

Here are Top 10 places where you can use keywords on your website to signal to Google which pages on your site you want to rank for which keywords :

In Url:

The web address for the page (i.e. www.test.com/useful-keywords-here). This is a good place to add keywords as you can use them without needing to use them in a catchy or enticing way like with the page title or H1 tag. Using keywords in your url isn’t possible when trying to rank your homepage though.

In H1 Tag :

The main header tag for the page. This is normally the title at the top of a page that tells the reader what the page is about – like an article title in a magazine or newspaper. This should ideally grab the interest of visitors to your site, to make them want to read on, so you need to balance using your keyword with making it interesting.

In Page Title

The page title, also known as a title tag or title element, is written in the coding of the page, like this – <title>Write Your Keywords Here</title>. The page title isn’t displayed on the page itself, but is shown in the search results and in the web browser. You definitely need to add your keyword for a page here, but don’t just put the keyword and nothing else.

In Meta Description Tag :

These same keywords should be placed strategically in the Meta Description of the page.Search engines use the Description (<meta name=”description” content=””>) as a summary of what the page is about, so placing keyword within those tags is always helpful.

In Body Content :

Keywords should also be used throughout the content of the page. This typically does not prove to be a difficult process if the keywords you are trying to optimize have been chosen correctly, as they already reflect the theme and intent of the page and will lend themselves to natural use in the text.Search engines generally give more weight to the first 200 words within a page. Therefore, it is very important to make sure that keywords are used appropriately near the top of the page and proportionally throughout the page.

In Headings Tags :

It is also important to consider the use of keywords in headings when you are trying to improve search engine ranking.Using SEO keywords appropriately within headings gives emphasis to the importance of those particular keywords to the theme of the page.Headings should be used as short descriptions (1-5 words) of the subject matter.Incorporating keywords into these heading tags gives priority to these keywords in terms of their relevance.

In Anchor Text :

The same can be said for the use of keywords within anchor text. Having keywords within anchor text implies that there is a link to another area on your site or externally that provides even more information related to these keywords, serving to enhance the idea this keyword is important to the theme of the site.

In Image Tag:

In addition to making sure that keywords are distributed well throughout the visible page content, they may also be incorporated into image alt attributes to reinforce the theme of the page. It is important that keywords used within alt text are truly relevant to the image and are kept to a length appropriate to the size of the image.

In Meta Keyword Tag :

The first and most obvious use of keywords during the organic search engine optimization (SEO) process is in the keywords Meta Tag located in the head section of the page’s html code. These keywords should be placed in the Meta Keywords tag (<meta name=”keywords” content=””>) in order from the largest to smallest phrase with the initial letter of each keyword capitalized.

In Breadcrumbs :

Another common navigation tool on websites, breadcrumbs can help people pinpoint where they are on your website, as well as how to get back to where they were previously. As with any place you have words on your website, your breadcrumbs are another opportunity for you to incorporate your keywords. Just make sure that the breadcrumb links provide enough detail about what the pages are, without being overly length – 1 to 3 words at most.

Conclusion

  • Google no longer takes into account the meta keywords tag, as it’s too easy to manipulate and spam. As they don’t pay attention to the tag, it makes no difference at all to your site’s rankings if you use it or not.
  • In the SEO process of incorporating keywords into a page and a site, it is extremely important to remember that keywords can be overused and become detrimental to search engine ranking.
  • Keyword stuffing in Meta Tags, headings, anchor text, alt attributes, or within the page content is an indicator of spam techniques. This practice is frowned upon by the search engines and can ultimately result in penalization.
  • Use keywords only as they are truly relevant to the subject matter and in a manner that makes sense to the average user.
