What are Meta Tags and Why are they important in SEO ?
Meta Tags have been one of the most basic elements of SEO. It is must to know for every SEO practitioner.
What are Meta Tags
The “meta” stands for “metadata,” which is the kind of data these tags provide – data about the data on your page.
A meta tags(short for metadata tag) are snippets of text or piece of code in Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) that help to describe a webpage content.
Meta tags exist in the head section of the HTML page and are not visible to user, but only to search engines.
The search engines still read them for it to have a simple, summarized idea of what your site is about and what exactly your keywords are.
Meta tags give search engines more information about a web page. This is implicit information, meaning that it’s not visible to visitors of the web page itself.
Meta tags can be found in the
<head>element of a web pageOften, meta tags will contain a
nameattribute, which sets a type of metadata. The value of this metadata is expressed through a
Metadata is not displayed on web-page but when you search any keyword on search engines it will display.
The only difference between tags you can see and tags you can’t see is location: meta tags only exist in HTML, usually at the “head” of the page, and so are only visible to search engines .
They were valued as a factor in rankings before – until people started abusing their use in getting on top of the SERPs. After that, Google opted meta tags out of the ranking factors.But that doesn’t mean they’re not important anymore. Meta tags still play quite a big role in your site’s SEO.
If you do right-click on your page and select View Page Source, you’ll be able to see the meta tags.You can add the following in the head section of the web page:
<meta name=“keywords” content=“KEYWORD1 KEYWORD2 etc. about 30 to 40 unique words”>
<meta name=“description” content=“An accurate, keyword-rich description about 150 characters”>
<meta name=“author” content=“Author’s Name”>
Refresh document every 30 seconds
<meta http-equiv=“refresh” content=“30”>
Stop Search engine crawlers
<meta name=“robots” content=“noindex”>
Why the tags are important ?
The general consensus among SEO experts is that metatags are dead. Even so, many of these same experts continue to use metatags in their own sites.
They are used for specify page description, keyword, author of page, last modify, index page by search engine or not.
Essentially, this tag can effect if your page should be indexed by the search engine or not.Even accidentally adding the Noindex attribute can prevent a page from been indexed, not speaking about a whole website.So this tag carries a lot of power.
To make sure you page is indexed, just enter the url into the search box and you should see it in the results.
The Meta Keywords is of no positive value to any major Search Engine especially not Google (they said it officially in 2009).Yahoo! says, they use the Keyword Meta Tag when it ranks a page. Hence it makes sense to add one for Yahoo! and any other minor search engines that still use.
Meta tags aren’t hard to implement yourself – you don’t really need a programmer, just some experience with HTML.
